The 2011 MMA season in DC may be over, but 2012 is already gearing up to be as explosive and powerful as the previous two seasons. OneWorld MMA starts the 2012 season with the District’s regular MMA event billed as DC;MAX-The Legacy Fight Series in its 8th installment. Schools/Academies/Camps interested in showcasing any up and coming dedicated MMA fighters, please direct your browser to www.oneworldmma.com and find out how you too can join the fight community thru competing or behind the scenes.

At the end of each year from here on in, we will be recognizing select persons of the season. OneWorld MMA is proud to reflect on bouts and contributors to the OWMMA events and the community as a whole and present the following.

The 2011 OWMMA Amateur Fighter of the Year recognition goes out to Julia Ho of MMA Institute out of Richmond, VA. Julia competed in OneWorld MMA presents DC;MAX 6 of the Legacy Fight Series on July 2nd, 2011 in downtown Washington DC at the legendary [and birth of DC’s regular MMA events] Fur Nightclub. Julia battled it out with PurePerformance Martial Arts Center fighter based out of Rockville, MD’s, Betty Huck for the first ever female OWMMA bout. These to competitors took it to the distance with the unanimous decision going to Julia Ho with a dominating three round performance. We look forward to seeing her again in 2012.

The 2011 OWMMA Professional Fighter of the Year recognition goes to Francisco Salguero of Yamasaki Academy out of Rockville, MD.  Francisco competed in the inaugural pro MMA event billed as OneWorld MMA presents DC;PRO FIGHTS on November 19th, 2011 in downtown DC at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. Francisco’s competitor, DeJuan Augusta Hathaway out of Georgia, put up the most intensive and relentless fight of the night, taking the win by decision.  Francisco’s performance earned him the right to carry this recognition we find as high regard as well. OWMMA and the Yamasaki camp are currently discussing Salguero’s 2012 opportunities and expect a return to the cage in early 2012.

The 2011 OWMMA Contributor of the Year recognition goes out to Rick McCoy of MMA Institute headquartered in Richmond, VA.  Rick has played a large role in the overall fight scene east of the Mississippi River for some time now.  He is not only a dedicated Coach and Fight Manager for numerous amateur, professional, and circuit competitors, but he is the owner of one of the east coasts most synonymous name to the MMA community.  Mr. McCoy is a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu blackbelt from Kazeka Muniz blackbelt under Carlos Gracie, Jr. and currently presides over four school locations across the Virginia area.
Rick has tirelessly put forth his time to coach, support or just consult multiple amateur and pro fighters thru out the season, all while supporting the sport overall.  With his extensive expertise, Rick McCoy was announced as the 2011-2012 Pro MMA Matchmaker for OneWorld MMA events.  We are grateful for his contributions not only to us here at OneWorld MMA, but for the sport of mixed martial arts as a whole and look forward to a long relationship with Mr. McCoy.
